Strategic Growth: Assess, Develop, Multiply
LEADERSHIP THOUGHT:
The win for our small groups is multiplying new leaders, new groups, and new Coaches. Healthy small groups don’t just gather—they grow by reaching new people, raising new leaders, and multiplying new groups because reaching the world with the Gospel requires it.
Multiplication doesn’t happen by accident—it happens intentionally. This guide will help you assess where your group is now and how to take practical next steps toward multiplication.
1. Assessing Your Group: Where Are We Now?
The first step is taking time to evaluate the current health, leadership potential, and engagement level in your group.
Reflection:
Who is in my group right now? (Write out the names of all consistent attendees.)
What next steps have group members already taken? What next steps do they need to take? (Growth Track, One2One, Baptism, Serving, Classes, L2L, etc.)
Who could be empowered to disciple others? Who could be a potential leader? (Use the FAITH framework: Faithful, Available, Involved, Teachable, Hungry.)
Next Step:
Write down your group roster and assess where each person is at. Identify 2-3 people who could grow into leadership roles.
2. Rotating Leadership: Preparing People to Lead
A key step in preparing for multiplication is rotating leadership responsibilities within the group. This allows future leaders to practice leadership before stepping into greater roles, and builds confidence as they practice leading.
How to Rotate Leadership Effectively:
Have different people facilitate the group discussions.
Provide feedback on what went well and areas for improvement after each group meeting.
Assign existing members follow-up responsibilities with newer members such as taking new members through One to One, PDL, or the Purple Book or walking them into serving or into our classes.
Reflection:
Who in my group is ready to take on more leadership responsibility? What specific leadership tasks can I delegate?
Next Step:
Assign a specific leadership role to a group member for the next meeting and plan a follow-up conversation.
3. Forming Clusters: The Foundation for Growth
Strategic clustering helps build deeper relationships and prepares for future branching. The goal is to form consistent, relationally connected clusters that naturally evolve into separate groups.
How to Form Clusters That Work:
As the group grows, Clusters often start with random groupings of people, but must eventually move toward consistency.
Observe relational chemistry: Who naturally connects well together?
Consider location: Who lives near each other and could meet more consistently when the cluster eventually branches?
Test consistency: Keep the same people together for several weeks and see how relationships deepen. Make adjustments as needed.
Reflection:
Which members already connect naturally in my group?
What would ideal clusters look like in my group?
Next Step:
Meet with the Tripod and list out potential clusters for your group based on relationships and location. Identify cluster leaders and potential tripods for each cluster.
4. Forming Tripods in Each Cluster and Branching the Group:
Once clusters develop consistency, the next step is to establish leadership Tripods in each cluster. This new leadership “core” will serve as the Tripod for the eventual branch.
How to Form Tripods within Clusters and Branch the Group:
See Steps 1 and 2 above and apply them in your Cluster.
Once Tripods are established, continue engaging in relational evangelism to grow the group.
Pray about who God is calling the group to reach.
Set a date to formally branch out the new group.
Reflection:
If my group is currently clustering, who could be part of the Tripods of each Cluster?
How can we grow the group through relational evangelism leading up to an eventual branch?
If Tripods are established, what is preventing us from officially branching the group?
Next Step:
What next step does your group need to take to prepare for a group branch?
DISCUSSION & ACTIVATION:
What are my next three action steps based on today’s discussion?
What support do I need from my coach or pastor moving forward?
PRAYER POINTS:
Pray for discernment to identify and invest in future leaders.
Pray for confidence as members step into leadership roles.
Pray for a culture of multiplication, that small groups will continue to grow and make disciples.

Prayer & Fasting:
As we enter the month of April and the Easter season we are inviting the church to join us in prayer and fasting each Wednesday in April. Together we will be praying for continued revival and the launching of several exciting initiatives. You can pick one or more meals to fast, or fast the entire day on Wednesday. As you fast, dedicate time to pray with us. Prayer targets and fasting guidelines can be found at Pearlside.org/prayer.
