Rehearsing the Fundamentals of Small Group Leadership| LG Guide July 2026
LEADERSHIP THOUGHT:
The Purpose of Small Groups:
Ministry in small groups is the biblical pattern used by Jesus and the Early Church.
Small Groups provide an environment for everyone to experience being known and loved as we process life through the Small Group Discussion Guide.
Small Groups provide a spiritual community to support one another’s spiritual growth. We shepherd the church through small groups.
Small Groups provide a venue for new leaders to be developed.
Important Small Group Practices:
Officially start and end on time to respect everyone’s time.
Before the group officially starts, engage in small talk and personal life updates.
Get into the Small Group Discussion Guide as soon as possible to maximize time for deeper sharing.
Occasionally, remind the group that what is shared in the group stays in the group to create a safe environment for transparency.
Keep the discussion moving by promoting quiet ones to respond.
Prep ahead of time. Review the Small Group Leadership Podcast, review the guide, and think about what you’ll share.
Cluster into smaller groups when attendance is more than 6 people. Research shows that the ideal conversation size is between 3-5 people.
Go over the L2L with upcoming leaders to prepare for multiplication.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
How does today's discussion help reframe your mind around the purpose of small groups and its importance in our spiritual lives? Explain.
Which of the above small group practices do you need to put into practice in your group? Explain.
Who are the new potential small group leaders that you could begin to train? Explain.
PRAYER POINTS:
What is one area of your life that you need prayer in right now? Share and pray for one another.
Pray for new leaders to be raised up in our small groups to eventually branch or plant new groups.
